A Competitive StreakSo the story begins with a day out schooling, I hacked Angel to a nearby livery yard for an hours cross country and showjumping. Needless to say she was doing really well and as I payed for my hire of the fields the owner told me in two days they were having a competition there and it would be simple enough. I decided I would hack up. I presumed Angel would be very well behaved and was pretty happy on our hack home.

The day before the competition I spent a lot of time grooming and washing Angel, cleaning tack, washing show clothes before heading home for a good nights sleep before her first competition. I was over excited by this point! That morning she was still clean as I arrived in my show clothes, tacked up and hacked up along the roads. When I arrived my friend had a space in her horse box so I was able to put her in and walk the course, it seemed like a simple course with no jumps higher than 85cm, I was confident we would jump well.

After I walked the course I took Angel into the warm up ring and she was good as gold, she was even happy going into the water, which is usually her bad point. I was bubbling with confidence going over and waiting for our names to be called. It wasn't long before I heard the loudspeaker say

"and now entering the ring is Rachael Saunders riding a lovely coloured mare, On Angels Wings"

I walked into the ring and trotted and cantered around quickly, having a slight look at each fence.

I pushed into a nice canter and looked for the first fence, a small spread. As we turned the corner we set up straight into the fence and before I could think Angel dug her heels into the ground and refused to jump, this seemed to happen once or twice at each fence despite my efforts to push her on and convince her that she could jump these so easily. Next we headed out to the cross country and the same thing happened, I can't count the amount of refusals and falls we had on that course, but the organizers were very nice and told me I could just carry on, after all there was only 5 or 6 other entries in the class.

As we walked out I burst into tears, how could my little Angel who was so well behaved be so badly behaved and have such a bad attitude towards a little competition. I was quite upset on the hack home and when we arrived I untacked Angel, hosed her off, scraped her down, put her sweat rug on and let her out into the small paddock. I sat on the gate and watched her, she stayed close to me and often touched her head on my knees and muzzled me as if to say she was sorry. I knew immediately that she didn't mean to upset me over it and I was quick to forgive her.

I wasn't quite sure where to go from here and was worried that we would never get to compete and her special little talent would be wasted. Unfortunately we have only competed once more and she was pretty much the same. I hope to get her out competing more because it would be a shame to see her talent go unknown.

There's this site, horseshow.com, I think. It let's you video tape you riding and enter competitions online :) maybe Angel doesn't like the pressure and atmosphere of competing. That could take some of the pressure off of her. But hopefully you'll find her key soon!
