How To Name Your Horse or Foal Based on Horsenality
 By Winniefield Park   •   29th Apr 2013   •   5,003 views   •   0 comments
Do you have a new horse to name? If you're buying a horse, it may come with a name. But that doesn't mean you like the name, and you may want to choose something more suitable. You may already have a name in mind and that's perfect. But maybe you can't decide, or need to name a new foal, or a virtual or sim horse. Ideally you want something distinctive, easy to say, that suits the horse's personality (horsenality?).

How To Name Your Horse or Foal Based on HorsenalityMany horses have two names. Registered horses will have an official name. These names can be long and complicated. For example an Arabian might be named Ibn Imtiyaz Rabbani. But you’re not going to want to yell that out the back door when it's time to call the horses in for their supper. So many registered and show horses have a pet or stable name as well.

Breed registries often have rules about the length or type of name you choose. Some registries require a certain number of letters. Others require a name that has the same first letter as the sire. Check the rules and then make several choices in case one or more of your choices has been taken.

Another thing you might want to consider is how the name will sound when you use it every day. It should be something easy to say, and not sound awkward in a sentence. I used to ride a little horse named Raz. I always tripped over saying 'ride Raz'.

There are lots of different ways you can choose a horse name. My favorite way is to choose a name from different mythologies. My Clydesdale cross mare, Freya, was named after the mythological Norse goddess of love, beauty, fertility and sorcery. There are mythologies the world over, such as Norse, Greek, Oriental, North and South American, Slavic, Irish and many more. Wikipedia is a good place to start exploring the many gods, goddesses and characters of mythology.

When I brought home a pony foal destined for the slaughter house, I felt I had to give her an appropriate name. After some searching, I ran across the word Abrigo. Abrigo is a Portuguese word for 'a shelter out of the rain'. Looking up some of the more common names like Star, Thunder or Beauty in another language is another great way to find interesting sounding names. Try online translators to find translations in many different languages.

Another idea is to explore common names from other cultures. These names can sound quite melodic to our ears, so look up lists from other cultures such as Arabic, Native American, or African names. These lists usually have the meanings along with the name, so that you not only can choose one that sounds distinctive, but suits your horse's characteristics.

If all else fails, random name generators yield some pretty interesting results. Don't just stick to one for horse names. Try name generators for rock bands, pet names, RPG name generators and others. Some generators allow you to add your own word to the mix, which can produce some really interesting and personalized names.

Still can't think of a name for your new horse? Take your time. Sometimes as you get to know the horse, a name will stick that suits its temperament or characteristics. So don't rush, the name will probably hit you just when you weren't even thinking about it.
