Horse Short Story

The snow - or so she thought it was snow - falls onto the ground like a blanket. The truth was that it was ash, pure, snow white ash that fell on her and all around her. Sakia looks up at the sky, dotted with white, and then looks out into the once immense forest. The trees that once loomed over her were now charred black logs. In panic, she half rears, turning around and racing away from what was her once expansive home. She runs with a fury that cursed the inferno that had swallowed her home, leaving nothing but ash and charred remains. Streaking through the last of the forest and out onto the vast plain, her black coat was blacker than it had ever been, darkened by the smoke. With her black eyes gleaming the mare congers up her wings of black mist that looked like they belonged to a ghost and takes off into the smoky air. Sakia soars above the land toward the place she’d met the love of her life; the only true love she’d ever had.

The meadow was covered in ash. Tiny whips of grass stick up around the otherwise flattened foliage. Sakia lands in the middle of clearing, her wings disappear and she looks around at the grass. A stream gurgles through the meadow, bits of soot floating down it; Sakia stands next to it. The mare’s back was beginning to whiten with the raining ash. She looks into the water and sees a massive but beautiful ebony stallion standing next to her in the translucent reflection. She sighs and says "Goblin, what will I do?" Her voice was pleading.

Goblin looks at her through the reflection with his dazzling green eyes. He blinks slowly; taking a deep breath, then says "I don't know, my love. Where is Sky?"

She looks back at him with chocolate brown eyes that are filled with love and says "He went off with my granddaughter. They are going to find Lark." He nods and I ask "Where are you?"

He smiles at me and says "Right next to you."

Sakia turns her head quickly to see the night colored stallion standing next to her. It was a dream come true. Her eyes begin to fill with tears but none fall from her eyes. She nuzzles his cheek and says "I've missed you so much."

Wrapping her head around his neck she closes her eyes, loving that he was there with her.
