My First Barn Show

I got the news that I was going to be in a barn show July 15th. That was just two days after I had joined my barn. My general reaction was to panic! The show was August 10th, only a few weeks away. This meant I had four Saturday's to get ready. For a girl who had just returned to the saddle for the first time in three years that was a lot of stress. I was constantly worrying and freaking out. I didn't want to be the only one without a ribbon at the end of the day. Winning was my only goal, which is fed by a burning competitive streak inside me.

When August 10th finally rolled around my nerves were completely whacked. I was shaking and my stomach me turning. Mom kept telling me that everything was going to be fine, I was going to win something. We pulled into my riding instructor's drive and I noticed all the family and relatives of the other riders, which didn't help with my nerves. I got out, wearing shorts and a work shirt for our local business. I walked over to Kat, my instructor, and asked where I could go to change clothes. I was a tad shocked when she told me to go to the tack room. There were grown men around, and the tack room wasn't much of a hide out when there are two doors with windows. Kat noticed my worried look and told me she'd make sure nobody went in.

Once changed, I came out and discovered I was riding Ruby. Now, normally I'm not one quick to judge, but I could already tell I wouldn't like this mare. Ruby is in her early twenties and is an all around pain. She had a reputation for not being a fun ride, and she knew it. She was a typical mare, stubborn, moody and general barn sour issues. I spent the majority of my time riding English pleasure getting her warmed up. I was almost sure I wasn't going to place, but Kassidy (Kat's daughter who was judging) made it a point to let everyone get a ribbon. I ended up placing third in English walk/trot/canter!

Once English pleasure was over I sat out the jumping portion since Ruby was in no shape to jump. Once jumping was over we went into Western pleasure. Ruby and I placed first in Western walk/trot/canter! Once the speed events rolled around Kat had I switch horses. I was put on a Leopard Appaloosa named DeeDee. This mare was brilliant! Kat had me walk and trot around the area to get the feel of DeeDee and then we started.

My First Barn Show

We didn't hand out ribbons for the speed event since they were just for fun. One of my favorite barn girls, Ashley, was my biggest competition. Ashley and Buddy were beasts when it came to speed. Buddy was an amazing all around horse. He had the build for English and the speed for Western. Ashley had the best poles time and I was the last to go. I was striving to beat Ashley. DeeDee and I moved as one, going about the pattern. I did not accomplish beating Ashley, but came second, which was a big surprise for me since it was my first time ever.

Over all I was pleased with my performance at the barn show. It was nice to be able to ride and see how a show worked. I had a sense of invincibility that I feel when I get in the saddle. That sense of invincibility is what makes me love DeeDee the most. She gives me the strength I need to accomplish my goals. Because of her I have been able to mark things off my bucket list I thought I would never reach. My success is all thanks to Miss DeeDee.
