Popular Quotes Used To Evaluate A Horse

Should You Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth? Horses and humans have had a long history together, and while humans certainly have formed many opinions about what makes a good horse, we'll never be sure exactly what a horse's opinion of a human may be. Here are some long-held opinions about horses that may or may not be true.
Don't look a give horse in the mouth
Why might someone want you to not look into a horse's mouth? Because when you look inside a gift horse's mouth, you'll probably get a look at its teeth. What can a horse's teeth tell you? You can tell a horse's age from its teeth. When horses were used as an important mode of transportation, a good horse was quite valuable to its owner. It's unlikely anyone would give away a good horse that could still work hard, unless they were very rich, of course. So if you received a gift horse, you might have actually received a horse that was coming to the end of it's working life, and that might not be so much of a gift. What else can we learn about looking in a horse's mouth? Hooked teeth, sharp edges and other dental problems might be the root of behavioral problems. Some horses have low palates or thick tongues, wolf teeth or tushes that make it uncomfortable to hold a bit. The good news about problems like these, as opposed to the 'long in the tooth', or toothless gift horse is that these problems can be solved.
No hoof, no horse
Neglect your horse's hooves and it's possible it will be uncomfortable and may become lame. Poorly cared for hooves can lead to problems like white line disease and thrush, and overgrown hooves can cause tendon and ligament problems because the horse is unable to stand comfortably. Eventually, the strain caused by overgrown or improperly trimmed hooves can cause pain throughout the horse's body. Even back pain and 'girthiness' can sometimes be traced to problems with the hooves and lower legs. Left long enough, poor hoof health can mean a horse can't be used for riding or driving. No hoof, no horse.
One white foot, buy him; two white feet, try him, three white feet, look well about him; four white feet, go without him
There's a few variations of this saying. One suggests for a horse with four white feet: ‘four white feet and white on his nose, take off his hide and feed him to the crows.’ There's long been a belief that white hooves tend to be weaker than white hooves. Many people avoid horses with white hooves, or feel that the white portions of their horse's hooves wear faster or chip more than the dark portions. However, there have been studies done to examine and compare the composition and strength of white and dark hoof walls. All of these studies have shown that there is no difference in the strength of light and dark-coloured hooves. What do you think? |

Dark Star
One I have heard from a lot of old cowboys that applies to appaloosas.
Solid coat, solid ride. Spotted coat, spotted ride.
It was explained to me that if you want a riding horse, stay away from the leopard apps, blankets or solid are the way to go. It could just be an old cowboy thing, but it's proved true in all the appaloosas I've rode.
