Horses and Dogs Needed for The Sunday Horse Movie

Good news for horse lovers. There’s another horse movie currently being filmed. In the spirit of such ‘underdog’ stories as Dreamer, Secretariat and Seabiscuit, The Sunday Horse is based on the true story of Debie Connor, a young rider from the wrong side of the tracks who overcomes prejudice, and a near-fatal accident that left her wheelchair bound. The injury meant she was forced to watch her horse Touch of Class earn two Olympic gold medals with another rider. In 2009 she again had a long struggle to get back into the saddle and prove herself and her rescue horse. Connor underwent several surgeries after the horrific crash over a fence injured both. Based loosely on her autobiography, The Sunday Horse will be an inspirational family film.

Twilight fans will be happy to see the lead role played by Nikki Reed, who played Rosalie Hale, Edward Cullen’s bitter adopted sister. Reed doesn’t have much of a competitive equestrian background. Online photos show her hugging her favorite horse and riding with friends. However, the director of Sunday Horse, Vic Armstrong does. Armstrong’s father coached five consecutive British Olympic jumping teams. Hopefully this means the movie will have a minimum of moments that make horse owners cringe.

Eighty-three-year-old co-star William Shatner, best known for his role as James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek TV series is also a long-time horseman. While the subject of the movie is largely stadium jumping, Shatner is more familiar with showing American Saddlebreds and American Quarter Horses.

Ryan Merriman who plays Jonathan, has also ridden, but new to stadium jumping. He’s spent some time with a riding coach getting comfortable over jumps.

Several casting calls have been issued over the last few weeks for many different roles, some requiring extras to have their own horses and riding equipment. The casting company, New Life Casting is also looking for horses and dogs. Prospects are encouraged to bring photos rather than animals. If you’re in the area, and available you can get the details at Some of the filming will take place near Conyers, Georgia. As of June 29, extras were still needed. Filming will also take place at the Georgia International Horse Park.

Connor herself continues to ride, train, coach and import horses. She is still very competitive. She specializes in hunters and jumpers and is available for clinics. She also has DVDs available on show jumping and pony training.

Release dates have not been announced but watch for The Sunday Horse early in 2015.
