Things Not To Say To Horse People
|
|
There are some things you just shouldn't say to a horse person. Here are a few that I've heard, and I wish I hadn't.
You Don't Really Need That Bridle, Saddle, Blanket, Jacket, Hoof Boot....
Of course, in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, a horse and horse equipment doesn't even make the list. That's probably because Maslow wasn't a horse person. If he had been, we might not have a Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs because he would have been off riding his horse instead of examining needs. However, if you look higher up on the pyramid of needs, you'll see things like safety, self esteem and self actualization. So it makes perfect sense that you need a new helmet for safety. And you need that new jacket for self esteem, and the show entry fee you just sent out - that will fulfill your need for self actualization. So yes, you really do need that bridle, saddle or whatever. Don't let anyone tell you differently.
Riding Isn't a Sport
We've talked about this before. I don't think golf is a sport either. It's a terrible waste of good pasture.
The Horse Does All the Work
Really? A few years ago, we had an Olympic short-listed eventer coming to the barn to give lessons. The lessons were private and forty minutes long. There were about six of us, all scheduled for one evening each week. After every lesson, the rider would slide off their horse, red faced, sweating and winded. As much as we loved the lessons, it was exhausting, and clearly, the horses were not as tired as the riders.
It's Just a Phase
This may be the wish of the person saying it, but it's not likely to come true. Once you've been infected by the horse bug, you've got it for life. I don't think it ever goes away. Maybe it goes dormant for a while. However, rarely is a love for horses ever just a phase.
You Should Just Sell Him/Her
This is usually said when complaining about your current horse. If you hear this, it really means you are complaining to the wrong person. A true horse friend would help you solve your problems, not sell them.
Horse Poo Stinks!
No, it doesn't. The people who declare this don't have the refined olfactory senses most horse people do. And when a horse passes wind? It's music to a horse person's ears. Both functions tell you that the horse's digestive system is working efficiently. Vet bills stink. Horse poo smells just fine.
It's Only a Horse
If you want to start a war, this is a good statement to make.
Yeah, I Know How to Ride
Of course the person that states they know how to ride probably was led around on a pony as a child, or gallumped down the beach on a tropical vacation five years ago. These people aren't aware that staying atop a horse takes the same skill as sitting on the kiddies' roller coaster at the carnival. Yes, it was bumpy, and you were jostled around, but you were being taken for a ride, not actually riding.
You Don't Need Another Horse
Seriously? Of course, you need another horse. Getting another horse isn't just a want, it's a need. Horses are herd animals. My theory is, that you need at least two more horses than there are riders. So, if there is one rider, that rider actually needs three horses? Why? Because it's not healthy for horses to live alone. So, a horse needs a companion. However, if the rider wants to go riding, the companion horse is left alone. This means it needs another companion. If there are three riders, they will need five horses. Ten riders need twelve horses. Agree? |
