Free Horse Movies and Documentaries Online

When the weather is miserable, and you can’t get out to ride, the next best thing might be snuggling under a warm blanket and watching a horse movie. While you have to pay for most movies online, there are still quite a few that you can watch for free and if you look hard enough, you’ll find some horse movies, shorts and documentaries among them.
NFB
The NFB (National Film Board of Canada) has many films available online including a National Film Board of Canada 1956 documentary, Sable Island, that explores the climate, habitats and inhabitants of one the most difficult environments on the earth, and is the home of the Sable Island pony. While you’re on the NFB site, you may wish to view Ti Jean in the Land of Iron. Methinks Ti Jean could use some riding lessons.
Indies
There are still places where horses are important for transportation. Post-horse is an independent documentary that explores the life of a Russian family who delivers the mail by horse and cart. Not exactly action packed, but a look at a very different way of life.
YouTube
Who needs television when you have YouTube? There’s lots of ‘horse stuff’ to watch although there’s much that should come under the category of ‘don’t try this at home’. There are many professional documentaries for viewing too. Here’s a few that caught my eye.
In the The Story of America's Wild Horses and Burros the BLM explains their role in the management of feral horses and burros in the American mid-west.
Pure Nature Specials: Wild Horses Return to China documents the return of the Prezwalski’s horses to the grasslands of the Kalamaili Nature Reserve.
And learn more about Mongolia and it’s two and four-legged inhabitants in the New Atlantis Full Documentaries: Mongolia.
A former coach and trainer travels the world to explore the relationship between humans and horses and how the can help and heal each other in the documentary The Path of the Horse.
TVO
TVO has episodes of Martin Clunes Horsepower. My husband and I enjoyed watching this series when it aired and it’s a treat to find episodes available for online viewing. Actor Martin Clunes, himself a rider, explores how horses affected and are still affecting our lives. The two episodes posted are available until December 31, 2014. Watch http://tvo.org/program/120120/horsepower-with-martin-clunes
Archive.org
Archive.org has many old movies and tv shows. The most famous tv horse is probably Mr. Ed, and you can find one episode on the site . Also check out the video section for movies like Mason of the Mounted, Seabiscuit, The Adventures of Rex and Rinty, Racing Blood, Cisco Kid: Quarter Horse, Wild Fire, Fighting Stallion and The Great Mike.
Not all are movies. Horse shorts, some just over a minute to ten minutes include:
Today's Horse Farm: Sun-Up to Sun-Down - A day at a Percheron breeding stable.
Marvels of Motion - filmed when slowmotion and other techniques were still new, and political correctness unheard of.
Queerosities - Diving Horses - Just over a minute long, but very interesting. This attraction was proposed at a new amusement park recently.
Reno Rodeo 1950s News Reel - Even in bull and bronc riding, safety has come a long way.
All The Kings Horses - A look back at real horsepower.
