Unless You Work Cattle You Are Not A Cowboy

If you were to ask me to describe myself, I would say I’m a recovering perfectionist with ADD. Recovering, because I know there’s no such thing as perfect and I sometimes have to work hard not to nitpick even little things. I tend to fuss over whether I’ve cooked the eggs perfectly at breakfast or my saddle pad is exactly even on both sides of the horse. The perfectionist side of me loves to see things categorized perfectly and I get rattled when I think they’re not. I’m working on this tendency, but I’m sorry, but that’s not a...
Miniature Horse
Miniature Horses are adorable. Adorable! My sister has one that occasionally rides in the back seat of her truck. They are fun and they can even be a great help to some people living with disabilities. But, they’re not horses. They did not breed two Thoroughbreds or Clydesdales together and get a Miniature Horse. Yes, it’s a possibility that there is a Thoroughbred, or Clyde way back in a Miniature Horse’s pedigree. But for the most part there are a lot of Shetlands and other small grade ponies. Look at any Miniature Horse pedigree and you could be looking at a solid wall of Shetland Ponies a few generations back. You can correct me when I say what a cute pony when I see your Mini. But if I say, oh right horse, I’m only humoring you and being polite. That’s not a horse.
Snaffle
There is a certain portion of the horse world that thinks any bit with a jointed mouthpiece is a snaffle. Nope. They’re wrong. Any bit that has shanks, and employs any sort of leverage is a curb bit whether or not it has a jointed mouthpiece. A snaffle does not work on leverage and does not have shanks. This causes some confusion for beginners. And, it makes naming bits tricky. What would you call a loose ring jointed snaffle for example? A loose ring snaffle snaffle? If it has shanks, it’s not a snaffle.
Carrot Stick, Wand or What Have You
A whip is a whip is a whip. You can call it whatever you want. You can make it whatever color, length, or shape you want. You can call attention to how well balanced it is, or it’s cute little button at the end of the handle. But it’s still a whip. It has the potential to punish or guide. It can be used for good or evil. And calling it anything but a whip is not going to prevent some cretin from misusing it. It’s not a carrot stick, dowsing rod or magic wand. It’s a whip.
Cowboy
Unless you’ve actually worked cattle, you’re not a cowboy. You may have bought the boots, the belt buckle and that hat. Wearing scuba gear won’t make me a scuba diver. I don’t believe the saying, clothes make the man (or woman). “When deeds speak, words are nothing.” If you want to be a cowboy, you have to work cattle. No cattle, no cowboy. |

While I agree with most of what you have said in the article I have to completely and utterly disagree about the cowboy part. I am a cowgirl, true blue cowgirl, but I don't work with cows. I'm a ranch hand, I work with horses. you can't pay my horse to go near cows, does that not make him a quarter horse. just because that is what most of the people do doesn't mean thats what they all do. You ask me to go round up the horses, or the sheep or goats we keep on the property and i can and i will. however my horses and I don't do cows. yet you would say I'm not a Cowgirl, and he's not a QH, oh how disappointed he will be. its like saying your not a rider if you don't compete in the olympics.

This article comes off as very ignorant in many parts (especially in reference to Minis and Cowboys) and offensive in others. I don't think this was well-thought out.

If you actually research Minis bloodlines you'll see that a great number descend soley from other pony breeds, most notably Shetlands. And, as far as cowboys go, yes I'm poking a little fun, but driving fast doesn't make me a racecar driver, even though I have the gloves.
I'd be the first to admit that opinion isn't fact. And, this is just my opinion.
CK: A QH doesn't have to herd cattle to be a QH. But he would need to herd cattle to be a cow horse. Remember why they were called Quarter horses. They can eat up a quarter mile in lickety split. And I bet yours can too.:)

Saferaphus you missed my entire point, on purpose or on accident, i don't really care. Yes, a Quarter Horse, got its name for the Quarter mile, that said my point is a very large portion of the breed does work with cows, weather it is cattle cutting, sorting, ect. the point is just because a large portion of the breed does mean that all of the horses in order to be a 'true' quarter horse has to work cows. Better yet, just because my horse is a QH doesn't mean he can run a quarter mile in a respectable time. just because a large part of them meet a stereotype, or perceived notion does not mean that is the way it is. yes it is your opinion, and yes everyone is entitled to there opinion, that doesn't mean you can be rude about someone beliefs.

I see what you're saying about the cowboy thing, but I don't agree that the term applies solely to cattle work. I know a lot of true blue cowboys who work on farms, work with horses, bail and load hay, all that good, hard cowboy work. Some of them actually work cattle, some of them don't, but what else would you call them? If the boots have mud and scuff marks on them, they're well-earned. Now if you live in the middle of the city, wash every speck of dirt off yourself immediately, and can't stand the smell of manure, then the boots and hats are strictly a misplaced fashion item. But the cows don't make the cowboy, the hard work does.
