So What Are We Wearing This Summer

If you’re like me you’ve spent the winter planning your summer equestrian wardrobe, and are anxious to get all the newest looks for 2016. Yeah... right... well, I patched my coveralls, wiped down my jodphur boots and shook the dust out of my helmet cover. But, just in case you are inclined to head out and get a whole new riding wardrobe, here’s what’s hot according to all the people in the know on the interwebs.

If you’re looking for a new helmet, be warned. Bling seems to has slipped off of helmets and moved further down. Schooling helmets are featuring cool graphic designs and a bit of color. There are also helmets designed for dressage, which is good to see. Western helmets are looking good too, with lots of different designs offered. But for the most part, same old, same old seems to be where it’s at with helmets right now. Somebody needs to shake things up a bit.

Over at Arista, colorblocked shirts and colorblocked and pinstripped breeches are new for this summer. Full seat breeches with either charcoal or black seats and patches, and side pinstripes emphasise their shimmery white. And, apparently that’s okay, because these breeches, which appear to fit with nary a wrinkle, are made of dirt and water repelling fabric called Nanosphere. There’s a fabric that repels green horse drool? I need to see a demonstration of this.

Several manufacturers have been offering sun blocking fabric in riding shirts, just in case the sun shines under your jacket. Short, sleeveless and long sleeve show and casual shirts come in both colorblocked and geometric prints. Fabrics wick moisture, are snag and pill resistant, and UVA resistant. There are lots of body hugging styles, which is something to embrace or despair over.

Boots have been plain black for a long time, but I remember coveting a pair of chocolate brown field boots ages ago. Brown is back, with Ariat's ‘Sienna’ Contour Zip Field Boots and a few others. I might not be able to let the fad slip by this time. So where did the helmet bling go? It slipped all the way down to the boots. Riding boots are featuring piping, texture and high shine. Sergio Grasso is offering boots in suede, corduroy, metallic leathers, and other finishes topped off with Swarovski Elements. Get out your Bejeweller and go nuts on your half-chaps.

According to Horse Journals, orange really is the new black. But, on viewing the video, I’d say it's really more of an apricot. These distinctions are important, right? Orange on the shoulder and elbow patches, orange pinstriping and piping. Makes me wish I’d had a bit of orange, or is it apricot, fabric around to patch my coveralls with. Teal is showing up in the horse world too, as it seems to be everywhere else. Or is it seafoam? Or, green ice... or... whatever....

Jacket styles come and go and you wouldn’t want to be caught in a jacket 0.5cm too long this summer. Thank goodness stuffy wool and broadcloth are a thing of the past because they were truly torture in the hot summer weather. They took forever to dry if it rained too. High tech fabrics come to the rescue as they stretch, repel dirt, dry quickly, and resist wrinkles. While the main colors remain traditional, a little color is creeping in on collars, pocket flaps and seam line piping. Nehru style collars and zip fronts are showing up too.

So now, equestrian fashionistas, you’re ready to shop. You can look forward to a summer wearing your graphic printed helmet, apricot shirt, colorblocked teal breeches, and sparkly boots. Trend following, not setting, is really what it’s all about.
