Naming Your Child After A Horse

There are a few signs of spring we can count on as horse lovers; shedding horse hair, manuer-y rivulets of meltwater, the reappearance of everything the wind blew away and covered in snow during the winter. And of course, there are the signs of spring that are recognized by non-horse lovers, like robins and crocus. Someone I knew mentioned that to them the first sign of spring was moms pushing strollers or carriages. I’d never registered that before she mentioned it. And, tucked in the carriages and strollers are babies whose name required as much care in choosing as any foal. What would be an appropriate name for a little horse lover?
You might think that the girl’s name Rosa was a variant of the name Rose, which is after all the name of a beautiful fragrant flower. The roots of the name Rosa as referring to horses is obscure, but many sources claim that the meaning of the word Rosa refers not just to the flower, but to fame and to horses. Other variations are Rosina, Roslyn and Rosalind. Rosamund means horse protector. Roswell means horse spring and could be a male or female name.
With its roots in the ancient Germanic languages, Marshall is an occupational name, and it was a name given to someone who looked after horses. Marah meant horse in this early language and scalc, meant servant.
Phillip or Philip is from the Greek words for love “philos” and horses “hippos” So the name Phillip means a lover of horses. A feminine form would be Phillipa or Pipa. There are many variations of Phillip depending on what part of the world you are from.
The name Horst is masculine. It may mean ‘horse’ in early German from the word ‘hors’. Horsa is the feminine form.
A number of horse names come from J.R. Tolkien's writing. Rohan is a name from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and it means ‘horse country’. Do a web search and you’ll find a fair number of Rohans. Roan is another name, which sounds close, but is the color of a horse. Rhiannon is the Welsh goddess of horses.
Jorunn is a Norwegian name that combines elements of the word, horse and love. Ryden and Rydell are Scandinavian names that mean horse.
Recall there was a movie named Faris Bueller’s Day Off? The name Faris comes from an Arabic word for a horseman or knight.
There are several names that in the near past have been popular. Colt, is of course a male baby horse, and Ryder is obvious. Blaze may be a boy’s name, or change it a little to Blaize for a girl. Or Maverick, which is a wild horse, could be a boy’s name. Or a girl’s name. Why not? Walker and Morgan are two horse breed inspired names.
There are more names in various languages that combine elements of words that refer to horses, but most will be strange to our ear, and we’d be unlikely to hear of a child named with one. There probably aren’t a lot of Eponas, Agrippes, Siavashs or Hippolytos out there. But then, if you want to stay away from that most popular baby name list, there’s opportunity for something unusual and meaningful. |
