Santa Anita Park Horse Racing Resumes After 22 Deaths
 By Winniefield Park   •   9th Apr 2019   •   40 views   •   0 comments

Horse racing has resumed at Santa Anita Park. Racing was temporarily suspended following the fatal breakdowns of twenty-two horses in less than sixteen weeks. That is over double the number that died in the same period last year. The track closed March 5, and since that time, officials have analyzed track conditions and looked at other contributing factors.

Changes have also been made to medication rules and use of whips. The California Horse Racing Board is restricting of medications such as anti inflammatories, and phasing out Lasix, a controversial drug already banned on race day everywhere but North America. By 2020, all horses racing will be Lasix free.

The restrictions on whipping and medications was protested, but California will now have the most strict regulations in the U.S.. Officials feel that it was not one factor that contributed to the number of breakdowns in the last few months. But the changes were made in an effort to protect horses and riders.
