Another Santa Anita Breakdown
 By Winniefield Park   •   16th Apr 2019   •   138 views   •   0 comments

After only two days of racing another horse has suffered fatal injuries at Santa Anita racetrack. Santa Anita was shut down March 5 and during the shut down, investigations into why twenty-two horses suffered fatal break downs since the middle of December were conducted. That’s over double the number of horses that had similar injuries in the previous year. Satisfied that the track conditions were safe and changes to whipping and drug rules were enacted, the track was reopened March 29, and the opening day was deemed successful.

But tragedy struck again with the breakdown of Arms Runner. The horses in the San Simeon Stakes turf race were just crossing the dirt track on a bend when two runners collided. Observers claim the track surface was not to blame. It appears one horse clipped the other. The second horse is recovering from its injuries, but Arms Runner was euthanized.

Santa Anita is not the only track seeing a sharp increase in race related deaths. Turf Paradise, Monmouth Park, Delmar and Saratoga have also had a spike in fatal breakdowns over the last two years.
