Appleby Fair Horse Abuse Video
 By Winniefield Park   •   22nd Jun 2019   •   516 views   •   0 comments

The Appleby Fair, a centuries old yearly gathering of Travellers and Gypsies has again come under criticism for the handling of horses. A petition has been started by an angered riding instructor after a very young horse was repeatedly mounted and dismounted by adults, whipped, pulled around and spooked into a wall.

Members of the Travellers community have stated that this was one incident amongst the 1000s of horse handlers at the fair, and that one ‘bad apple’ isn’t representative of all who attended. The petition, once it has reached 25,00 signatures can be sent to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Organizers stated that overall there have been fewer complaints at this year’s fair. Over 30 RSPCA officers were onsite to oversee how the horses were treated. Police are working with the RSPCA in an effort to find those in the video.

The Appleby Horse Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in Cumbria, England. Held each year in early June, the fair attracts over 10,000 Gypsies, 30,000 visitors, and hundreds of horses
