If you’ve ever wondered how mounted police units desensitize their horses to working around crowds in stressful situations, the Columbus Mounted Police unit provides a glimpse into their training process.

Police horses need to face many loud noises, strange sights and unfamiliar situations. So desensitization is essential to allowing the horses to work effectively, and keep the rider, pedestrians and themselves safe. Whistles, loudspeakers, plastic flags, small cannons, smoke bombs and other paraphernalia are used to expose the horses to the sometimes frightening situations they can encounter while being used for crowd control at the various festivals and events in the Columbus, Ohio area. The benchmark: being able to ride the horse safely amongst baby carriages.
