New Mexico County Takes Preemptive Action Against VSS Spread
 By Winniefield Park   •   23rd Jul 2019   •   222 views   •   0 comments

In an effort to control an outbreak of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus in horses, Sandoval County in New Mexico is proceeding with an aggressive mosquito control program. Vesicular Stomatitis is a viral disease carried by biting insects. It can lead to high fever and ulceration of the tongue, mouth and lips which can make it difficult for the animal to eat. Other areas of the body can also be affected. The virus can be carried to horses and other livestock via mosquitoes and blackflies. Humans can contract VSV by handling infected animals.

Sandoval County has begun an increased spraying program to combat flying insects in an effort to curb the outbreak and affected horses have been quarantined. There are no vaccines available for horses.
