After six horses died during chuckwagon racing at this yearís Calgary Stampede the sport is under scrutiny. July 14, three horses on the same team were euthanized after sustaining irreparable injuries. After one horse broke a hind leg the team went down, and three of the four horse team, despite veterinary treatment, were euthanized. Stampede authorities state that the competition is under safety review.

The Calgary Stampede, a Canadian tradition for decades, has come under scrutiny by animal lovers for the rough and tumble, and sometimes deadly competitions involving horses, cattle and other livestock. The latest horse deaths were three of six that have occurred since the competition started on July 5. Four of the six horses belonged to the same family. One driver has been fined $10,000 and banned from competition for causing the accident that killed the first horse.
