Listening To The Horse Documentary
 By Winniefield Park   •   11th Aug 2019   •   564 views   •   0 comments

Created in 2018, the documentary series Listening to the Horse is designed to help you develop a better understanding of your horse and improve your relationship whether in the saddle or on the ground. Featured are over 70 well known industry experts and horse trainers from around the world. The seven part documentary was produced and directed by horsewoman and film maker Elaine Heney of Grey Pony Films. The doc won Best Documentary and Best Director at the Hollywood Hills Film Awards. It was also screened at the Equus Film Festival, a winner at the New York Indie Film festival.

The first installment of the series is available for viewing on YouTube. It isn’t an overview. the first episode includes discussions about common riding habits that inhibit our horse’s learning, recognizing when a horse is beginning to understand what it is learning, how to use your body while handling, a quick look at starting Mustangs, rewarding learning with release, problem solving, equine pain and anxiety, and other issues that are common to all horses regardless of the discipline they are being used in. There is a wide range of approaches, including natural horsemanship, positive reinforcement and clicker training, classical training in both English and western disciplines.

But, the series is not just about riding and training. Nutritionists, veterinarians, therapy practitioners and animal behaviorists discuss topics like physical and mental horse health, nutrition, supportive therapies, herd dynamics and stable management. You’ll also learn about equipment such as the Haylo horse feeder and field shelters.

Each episode is from forty to fifty minutes long. The series was accessible with a ‘free’ movie ticket early in 2019. So unless there is another ‘premier’ you’ll have to purchase episodes 2 to 7. You may also purchase the DVD set, online access or DVD set with almost one hundred bonus interviews. With purchase, you’ll get transcript PDFs, audio mP3s and free shipping. Prices for the three different packages are between $99 to $197 USD. The series is available at an educational rate for Secretaries or District Commissioners of registered Pony Clubs worldwide.

Even if you only watch the first episode, you’ll see how top trainers approach different situations with sometimes ‘untrainable’ or ‘difficult’ horses and learn how horses think and learn. Grey Pony, the production company has created a Listening to the Horse challenge and offers free online clinics and a bookstore with books complimenting the documentary series and movies.
