25 years ago, Dr. Don Hoglund led a roundup that saved the lives of about 1800 wild horses. Hoglund is best known for his wild horse training methods and prison inmate programs. But, he claims, the highlight of his career is the roundup that moved the almost 2000 horses out of harm's way and off of the White Sands Missile Range where they roamed. Their home range offered only limited resources and horses were dying of dehydration and starvation.
Hoglund took leadership of the roundup, which included contentious boardroom negotiations, dealing with governmental bureaucracies to riding out on horseback himself to be part of the roundup. A half hour video about the roundup explains Hoglund’s work and the successes and failures resulting from the event. The film was inspired by Hoglund’s book “Nobody’s Horses”. Running Wild was produced by USA Today Network Investigation.
