70 Year Old Wins Mongol Derby 600 Mile Horse Race
 By Winniefield Park   •   24th Aug 2019   •   525 views   •   1 comments

Imagine spending twelve hours on horseback traversing some of the roughest terrain on earth, through largely uninhabited lands. Thatís exactly what most of the participants in the Mongol Derby do. The race, which is meant to replicate Genghis Khanís messenger route is 600 miles long, and claims to be the longest race in the world. And this yearís winner has set a new record by being the oldest rider to not only complete, but win the race.

70 year old Robert Long of Boise Idaho, completed the race, changing horses at stations approximately 40 kilometers apart 28 times. To win the race, you must finish by day seven of the allotted 10 days. To add to the challenge, the horses are quite often only partially trained and are much smaller than many riders are used to. Long, and experienced horseman, finished the race in six days and beat out 41 other competitors from around the world.

The Mongol Derby is an equestrian endurance race which started in 2009. The race is the longest in the world and extends 1000 km through the Mongolian Steppe. The course recreates the Genghis Khan horse messenger system that took place around 1224.
