Horse Owners Consider Fire Safety
 By Winniefield Park   •   14th Sep 2019   •   344 views   •   0 comments

While horse owners and others affected by Hurricane Dorian are contending with horrific flooding and wind damage, those who survived last yearís wildfires on the west coast are examining how to prevent the tragic loss of both horses and property. Over the years dozens of horses have been killed when wildfires ripped through stables they were unable to escape from. As it appears these deadly fires are becoming more frequent, some people are taking steps to avoid tragedy both human and horse.

Animal activists would like to see all barns installed with overhead sprinkler systems and want to see it part of the building code. A clothing designer has come up with another idea for horses stabled and outdoors in pastures. Blaze orange fire retardant blankets could help protect horses from skin burns and used as Ďevacuation wearí. All horse clothing, she claims, should feature fire retardancy. Embedded microchips in the emergency blankets could reunite horses and owners quicker. But, other measures, including early evacuation are also being discussed.
