National Seashore Wild Foal Born During Hurricane
 By Winniefield Park   •   2nd Oct 2019   •   189 views   •   0 comments

While many people were concerned for the safety of the wild horses on the Outer Banks during Hurricane Dorian, the herd near the Shackleford Banks experienced an increase, rather than a decrease of members. Evacuation order for humans were put in place, but the horses were left to fend for themselves. And, they weathered the storm, as they have weathered storms for centuries before.

Sometime shortly before, during or after the hurricane, a new foal was born. Cape Lookout National Seashore posted a picture of the foal, taken with a telephoto lens and announced that a filly had been born.

As many broodmare managers will tell you, itís not unusual for horses to foal during a storm. Some attribute it to a drop in the barometric pressure and others think mares feel safer during storms because a predator is less likely to attack. Check out the Cape Lookout National Seashore Facebook page for the creative names being suggested for the new foal..
