Winter 2019 Hay Shortage

Just a few months after the harvest of the 2019 crop, and many months before the first hay crops of 2020 are brought in horse owners in western Canada are running into shortages. While other areas have struggled with drought, some areas received above average rain that made it difficult to harvest high quality hay. One horse rescue, Adorado Nino Rescue and Sanctuary near Leduc, Alberta is asking for high quality hay and anticipates having to take in more horses as owners may be unable to afford the higher costs. That can mean owners will not be able to afford to keep their horses, placing a greater burden on rescues.
