The Controversial Salt River Horses
 By Winniefield Park   •   16th Mar 2020   •   91 views   •   0 comments

Approximately 250 feral horses graze the floodplains of the Salt River and areas in the Tonto National Forest in Arizona. Once they were in danger of disappearing. But, a dedicated group of local advocates called Salt River Wild Horse Management Group was formed to prevent the clearing out of the horses after a 2015 declaration that the horses were ‘unauthorized stock’. The newest controversy affecting the herd is a fence that has been erected to keep the horses from crossing a roadway. In 2019, about a dozen horses were involved in vehicle accidents, and the fence, put up by the U.S. Forest Service is intended to keep both motorists and horses safe. However, the advocacy group is concerned that the fence may do more harm than good.
