I will never forget the day my Miniature mare Chardonnay had her first foal. It was a Sunday morning around 10:00 am. My family was just sitting down for brunch when my brother (A non-horse person) came into the house stating "Mom, Your horse is laying on the ground with her legs in the air!". At that moment me and my mother knew the foal was coming! We jumped to our feet and gathered the supplies we might need and took off for the barn. As I jogged down the hill to the small barn tons of emotion were running through me. Excitement, joy, nervousness and fear. 'What if the foal isn't healthy?' 'What if something goes wrong in the delivery'?. As we got to my mare sure enough that foal was coming, and fast! It was Chardonnay's first time having a foal and she was doing great. Before we knew it out popped a tiny, wet little filly. Weighing about 20 pounds. Her features where striking. A beautiful silver with snow white markings. Markings that were quite similar to her mother's. It was the most magical thing I had ever seen as Chardonnay stood up and reached her muzzle out slowly to the filly, Nickering a soft nicker as if welcoming her baby to the world.
We soon named the foal Shell-don's Tiny Tequila. And we would call her Tiki for short. Watching Tiki try and stand on her wobbly little hooves for the first time was one of the cutest things I had ever seen and hearing Chardonnay's nickers of encouragement every time Tiki lost her balance and tumbled into the straw.
Two months later we were blessed with another healthy filly, From a mare named Eve. We named the filly Midnight Shadow Dancer, Shadow for short. Because she was born at midnight. The beautiful filly was a bay. We jokingly nicknamed her Lil' Black Heart because she always seemed to be getting into trouble and nibbling on our legs.
Tiki and Shadow grew up together and are best friends to this day, They are actually half-sisters and are both turning three this year. It's amazing how fast they grow up! It seems like just yesterday I was at the barn with my hand on Chardonnay's belly, feeling the foal kick.
I'm hoping to show Tiki and Shadow this summer. We are also expecting another foal from Chardonnay in July. |
