Coming up this evening is the 136th Kentucky Derby. When most people think of the Kentucky Derby, they think of the hats, the parties, and the betting. But for most people, it’s just sitting at home watching the race on TV. Either way, the Kentucky Derby is referred to as “the most exciting 2 minutes in sports” and is enjoyed whether you’re at home or watching it live.
This year’s race is the usual length, 1.25 miles, and is run by 20 three-year-olds who have been ‘lightly raced’. Just like last year, this year the track is going to be extremely muddy. Most of the horses in this year’s race have little or no experience running on dirt. Most of them have made their fame on the turf track. There are a few horses, however, that perform considerably well on a dirt track. One of those horses is Super Saver.
Super Saver is a colt ridden by Calvin Borel, the same jockey as last year’s winner, Mine That Bird. Last year at Belmont Park, Super Saver won by seven lengths in a mess of mud and rain. His most recent race was the Arkansas Derby, in which he finished in second place. He is quite a good little runner, and has quite a chance in this year’s derby.
Another horse that is looking like a favorite is Looking At Lucky. Lucky is trained by Bob Baffert, who has had three Derby winners in the past. Looking At Lucky has ran a total of eight races six which he has won, one which he came in second, and one which he came in third. His most recent race was the Santa Anita Derby and he finished in third. Garret Gomez, the jockey who came in second in last year’s derby, is riding Looking at Lucky. Lucky is ‘looking’ like he could be a winner this year.
Now it’s time for girl power! This year, Devil May Care is the only filly in the race. She may not have a lot of experience, but she has heart. She has run a total of five races, and won three. Only three fillies have ever won the Kentucky Derby, so if Devil May Care wins, she will be added to the small, yet important list.
Other horses, such as Sidney’s Candy, are not so fortunate with this year’s weather conditions. He is a champion on the synthetic track, and has never run on a mud track. Being put in slot 20 (the one on the VERY far end of the track), he could have some difficulty getting a good start. Other than these two disadvantages, Sidney’s Candy could run very well. His jockey is Joe Talamo, the successful young jockey featured on the TV show, ‘Jockeys’. Candy’s most recent race was the Santa Anita Derby and he won. Today’s race could either turn up in victory or disaster for Sidney’s Candy.
These are just a few of the horses running today, but below is a list of all 20 horses, their number, and their odds. The odds I listed are their current odds, but they can change any time today.
#1 Looking at Lucky - Odds: 4-1
#2 Ice Box - Odds: 8-1
#3 Noble’s Promise - Odds: 12-1
#4 Super Saver - Odds: 12-1
#5 Line Of David - Odds: 20-1
#6 Stately Victor - Odds: 20-1
#7 American Lion - Odds: 20-1
#8 Dean’s Kitten - Odds: 35-1
#9 Make Music For Me - Odds: 35-1
#10 Paddy O’Padro - Odds: 20-1
#11 Devil May Care - Odds: 8-1
#12 Conveyance - Odds: 12-1
#13 Jackson Bend - Odds: 12-1
#14 Mission Impazible - Odds: 15-1
#15 Discreetly Mine - Odds: 30-1
#16 Awesome Act - Odds: 8-1
#17 Dublin - Odds: 12-1
#18 Backtalk - Odds: 35-1
#19 Homeboykris - Odds: 30-1
#20 Sidney’s Candy - Odds: 6-1
Many of these horses are expected to do very well today, not just the four I listed earlier. Awesome Act and Dublin are also favorites. The pre-derby broadcast starts at about 3:00 this afternoon, but the actual race isn’t expected to run until 5:24 this evening. So sit back, relax, and watch ‘the most exciting two minutes in sports’ whether it’s on TV or you’re at Churchill Downs yourself!

I'm watching it on NBC. Great article. Very informative, though I would like to add that the betting odds have changed.

Super Saver gave a great run...all of them did, I still wish that Eskendereya didn't have to be scratched, I'm sure he would've won.
