Everyone has the stage of "Oh, I'm the best rider, I'm riding only fun and doing nothing dangerous, I don't need a helmet." Come on, we all have that. Well I'm giving you a wake up call, ANYTHING can happen on a horse, even if it's a bombproof horse. The main argument is helmets mess up my hair, they are bulky and make me sweat. Seriously, after you are done riding you can just take a brush, make your hair then wash your face. If you are surrounded by horse people, they really don't care how you look after you ride and I bet your horse doesn't mind how you look either.
Times have changed, we now have tons of helmets that offer ventilation, last longer, have different sizes and even come in different colors! Helmets now are light weight with good shock-absorbing capabilities so you don't have that bulky, hot, heavy helmet that make you sweat.
Another argument I hear is, helmets are only for kids who are under age or aren't good riders yet and adults have the choice to wear one or not. I'm going to go into the long run. You don't have a helmet, your horse bucks and you slam right on your head. BAM! just because of that, you could be paralyzed, or have epilepsy, or short term memory, or you can even kiss the world goodbye (Meaning you die). Dont't forget the medical costs and the chance you may never ride again.
In western events helmets are frowned upon and you have to wear a western hat. So, safety before glamor. Who cares if people make fun of you because you wear a helmet and not a flashy cowboy hat? Because its you who will be saved, while the non-helmet rider gets impaired for the rest of their life because they want to look flashy and not wear a helmet.
If this article hasn't convince you, keep in mind that 75,000 equestrian injures come into the emergency room each year, most can be prevented if they wore a helmet.
So people think, is it worth it not to wear a helmet just to look pretty? Think of what I said above and how better technology is making helmets more comfortable and safe than ever before.

Lovely. I know many people who make fun of me because I wear a helmet and this is an article they need to read! Some of my friends have even dropped out of Drill Team because of a helmet rule.

And for those western events, know they have created a helmet that looks like a cowboy hat. So the excuses for not wearing a helmet other than complete ignorance are slipping away.

I have fallen off many times and most have involved my head hitting the ground, I always wear a helmet and I am quite happy to because if I didnt I am sure I would have ended up in hospital. Helmets and riding boots and all that gear we may not like, is there for a reason and we should respect that and be thankful and use that gear to protect ourselves.

Thank you SO much for posting this. It's a very necessary safety precaution.
Another major argument is that if you're riding a good horse, that's reached the maintenance stage of its career, and you have a very good relationship with said horse, it wont throw you.
iNo amount of training can keep your horse from tripping./i

Thanks for posting this Rivy! It is a really necessary safety precaution and i learned one day just how important it was. I was riding (w/ a helmet) and tempest spooked at some cats (she's very skittish) the next thing i knew, i was flying through the air towards the ground. I landed on my helmet and it cracked. My head still hurt, but at least it wasn't broken (like my helmet)

My friend is trying to push me into wearing a cowboy hat in bigger western shows, but I like my helmet. I am going to stand up for what is right. Thank you for this article! I love it!

great article. I had a friend fall off her horse during cross-country and her horse refused to jump over the water jump and she flew over his neck. Before she started the course she told me she didn't need a helmet and she was going to be fine but her mom made her wear it . She had a concussion even with her helmet. I would hate to think of what would have happened if she had no helmet.
listen to your mom's!!!
