A Horse Named Skippy
 By bucknut   •   4th Jul 2010   •   3,223 views   •   10 comments
Upon learning that I was moving, I was terrified. I had moved before but never in the middle of the school year. Many things ran through my head such as "will I get new friends?" or "will I be made fun of?", but of course the first thing that ran through my head was "will there be horses?".

A Horse Named SkippyShortly after arriving in my new home I began school. I went through each day slowly acting as a robot. Doing my work and keeping to myself. I did have one friend my first year, and without him I honestly dont know if I would have made it. For my first year I was horseless. Days dragged on without horses. Yes, I had my models, but for me that was not enough.

Soon I began to search for a local stable. After days of searching I found one that seemed suitable. After showing my parents the website they agreed to call. Weeks went after they called before I got to go check out the place and sign up for lessons.

We pulled up to a small farm and went through the electric gate. It was a dream come true. Horses on both sides of me. A large outdoor arena. 3 huge barns and to add to all this, a giant house. When we came to a stop I didnt jump out at first but I took in the scene. An older woman, whom I soon learned was my trainer, was instructing a private lesson to a younger girl on a large quarter horse. It was love at first sight. Little did I know that "large quarter horse" was to become my foundation.

I met my trainer and got a quick tour of the place before leaving again. It was all too quick but I knew I would be back. A few days after checking the place out I returned for my first lesson. The "large quarter horse" was waiting for me to saddle him. I was nervous of course but I calmly approached him and began to pet him. He was so sweet at first, but he would soon be putting me through the works under saddle. I saddled him up and walked him around the arena to warm him up. After checking his girth,I mounted. Soon after mounting my trainer informed me he was a 21y/o AQH gelding and had placed very high at the Quater Horse Congress and had many QH points. I soon became accustomed to his smooth gaits and how well he responded.

Keep in mind this was quite a while ago and I was not a very good rider. My trainer soon introduced me to some trail obstacles and that is where "my foundation" got fed up. When asking Skippy to back up, he would back up, but he wouldnt stop. It was very frustrating but about the funniest thing ever. After many episodes of this, and him not wanting to slow, I got the hang of him. He was the best horse I have ever rode and he was my best friend when I had none. He was my confidence when mine was gone and he was my foundation through all of those and more.

On May 14th I was scheduled for yet another lesson with Skip but things changed. The session was cancelled and my trainer would contact me later with a date. Weeks passed and I got fed up so I called my trainer. She was out of town and would call back soon. More weeks passed so I contacted one of the boarders on June 8, 2010 and she informed me that they were selling the farm and moving. I was crushed and still am. That would mean no more Skippy. The house had been on the market since late March and my trainer had failed to inform me of this. I cried for what seemed forever. Little had I known that my foundation was falling apart. Had I known the day they listed the farm I would have been able to prepare, instead I was thrown upon with this information with nothing but memories. I had not even been able to say good bye. I have found another stable I am going to attend but it will never be the same. Sure, I might build another foundation but none will ever be as sturdy as what my Skippy helped me to build.

Good Bye Skippydo Fancyman(aka My Foundation) I will miss you and I love you.
